We've seen several state laws copied and posted here that have the "five car back up rule" (or another similar number). NONE of them state that you are required to pull over even if you are doing the limit and those behind you want to go faster. ALL of them state that slow moving vehicles must pull over to allow for others to achieve "reasonable" or "normal" or customary" rates of speed. Surpassing the speed limit is not normal or reasonable. That's why it's illegal.
The intent of this law is clearly to keep traffic moving at a reasonable flow. The intent is clearly to prevent OVERLY slow vehicles from disrupting traffic. Any other interpretation is just plain wrong. And yes, cops and judges can be wrong. Way too many people are thinking way too hard.
I also strongly suspect that some of the stories posted here are flat out untrue. Has any member of this forum been issued a traffic infraction for NOT speeding? Or for GOING THE SPEED LIMIT while traffic piled up behind you? If so did the judge convict? Please do not include the stories you've heard from the neighbor of your friend who has a sister whose ex-boyfrind had a cousin who had this happen in 1950.
By the way, common sense and self preservation tell us to pull over and let them pass if the opportunity presents itself. Really pretty simple.
