Back in the early seventies buddy and I rode bikes from NW Ohio to Toronto to Mosport track for a Can-Am race. Tented in infield in our small tent, sleeping on air mattresses. Infield was sand roads with dirt bikes and dune buggies. Then the rain started, lots of rain! All nite rain with riding still going on, lit with only the few pole lites. The riders were as brown as the sand roads. The only reason we slept dry was our mattresses elevated us above the flooded tent floor. Got up the next day to potable toilets full above the seat! Needless to say we spent the second nite in a motel. Dave
Potable or not, I wouldn’t drink from a toilet. - HadEnoughExplorerReading these reminds me why I almost never stay in a campground. I'll take the safety and peace and quiet of parking randomly around various towns any day... And I'm a full timer.
The few times I have stayed in a campground, I had much better experiences than this but still felt annoyed by all the neighbors. I prefer anonymity and not talking to people around me.
Some terrible times in this thread... - snowpekeExplorerMy story started when I went to walk my two pekgenese dogs and walked by this rotwhiler tyed up and barking aggressively. On the way back it was jerking hard on its chain and broke loose. Atacked both dogs one had broken ribs with a $200 vet bill. The owner wrote a check and it bounced. After threading a law suit he payed. Very scary!
- Chum_leeExplorerI'd have to say it was the three boon dockers camped next to us in a 14 day BLM campsite. They had a German Shepard and a Rottweiler, both over 100 pound dogs. They were very aggressive loud barking dogs that ran wild. They (the dogs) left 2 weeks worth of lawn sausage land mines throughout their camp site. In a pack it in pack it out campground, the campers left all their trash in the fire pit upon departure. Lovely!

Friend, if your wife follows this board you are dead meat! You might want to edit that and add something like "but not as much of a looker as now" if you want to continue living. lol
Thank you, mama Sylvia. - ppineExplorer II

Not married to her now. That was 45 years ago. - Nv_GuyExplorer IIIBack in the early 80's I made a deal with a coworker to borrow his cabover camper, figured it would be easy peasy to get it in my (new to me) Dodge Dually.
First warning of what to come- I cracked one fender when I was backing into the yard to pick up the camper- I had to back thru a ditch, and ran over the mud flaps the PO had installed. Camper install was OK...except it didn't have the necessary wide camper jacks. Got two scratched fenders. Spent three HOT as all get out nights in that non A/C camper. First hot night at a car show in Sacramento. Second was a campground in Reno where the DW went to use the restroom, except she found it had 5-6 drunk teens in there carrying on..Next night was Lake Tahoe, (still hotter than normal humans like) got a campsite, drove into town for fuel and food. As I fueled the truck I was staring wistfully at a motel across the street (AC, showers-nirvana) apparently the DW picked up on what I was thinking..Got a room, headed home the next day. Couldn't get the DW into another RV for 15 years.. - bpoundsNomadI have to say, about half of these horror stories would fall into my entertainment category. Would be fun stories to share back at work on Monday. Nobody died right?
My only bad experiences have been weather related. Like the horrible lightning storm that had our Golden Retriever and Labrador scared to the point that I feared for their health. I guess some country dogs may get used to that, but they had never experienced it.
A father/son (about 12yo) fishing trip, with tent accommodation and only campfire meal preps, and a wind that destroyed the tent beyond use. Was a cold and hungry night in the truck cab.
Probably the worst was not in camp, but on our way home. Tent camping again, pulling a utility trailer, single cab truck, and the same 2 big dogs. Mojave desert, labor day Monday. About 105 degrees. Nowhere to get the dogs out of the sun. Smog pump pulley is plastic, and lets go. AAA says they can't find a tow truck with a driver who has hours available. Finally a shop owner in Boron came out with his own company tow truck and pulled us to his shop. Let us sit with the dogs in his very small lobby, which was far from cool, but at least out of the sun. Closest parts were in Barstow, which is pretty far away, but he got it for us. That guy was a saint in our opinion. Didn't charge us nearly enough, even with the extra I insisted he accept. Came really close to just renting a car, for safety sake for the dogs, but couldn't even find a car available on that weekend. - Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIMan standing in entry doorway of his trailer in site next to us brushing his teeth .... That situation was 'resolved' with a private conversation between me & him - mama_sylviaExplorer> my wife who was a looker in those days
