When do you inspect a used unit?

How do folks typically fit an inspection into the buying process for a USED unit? Is it like buying a house, where you put in a bid first contingent on inspection, get acceptance on the price, and THEN do the inspection?

If so, is there usually a willingness to further haggle if unexpected problems are found? Or is it like, "Well it's a used unit what do you expect?"

Thanks!

Yah, of course inspect before paying. But do folks usually get agreement on price first? I'm thinking if you're 20k apart on price, it probably doesn't make sense to do the inspection yet.

If you were 20k apart I don't think you would even waste your time going to look at it. When we bought from a private seller we talked price on the phone. He had several pictures online that looked good so we drove 7 hours to go look at it. When we arrived he had it hooked up and everything running. It looked even better in person than the pictures. I took my ladder and creeper. After looking on the inside and deciding to take the next step I spent the next two hours going over everything top to bottom and front to back. I then made an offer 7k less than he was asking based on what I thought needed replaced (mostly tires) and one side of the windshield and the toilet was leaking. First he said no way so we thanked him and started to leave. He then ask if we were ready to buy that day. We wrote up a simple agreement, gave him a small deposit and left. This was Saturday and the title was at the bank. We went back the next week, gave him a certified check, he gave us the title and we drove it home.

  • Prior to money hanging hands. Prior to signing of anything. Take it to a non biast qualified reputable service center for a thorough evaluation. An honest seller will be fine with this and it may benefit him as well. When I bought my HTT ten years ago the seller asured me everything had been checked out by his service guy. I said I would be in for a walk through and have everything hooked up and working. I found broken water lines, blown out water heater, bad batteries. All this seller fixed to make the sale. Do you think he would care after the sale? It's a buyers market
  • Its up to who is looking if you think its a unit for you just call a inspecter he will schedule if you want to be there or go do a inspection then send you a report and should give a brief thought about the unit ovrr the phone
  • right from the begining go look at the rv and as your looking ask if you can have a inspection done? if the answers no ? time to leave.
  • You better be sure about buying before signing a contract unless you write in a contingency of some sort before signing. Legally, you and the seller sign a contract and they accept your deposit - you bought it!
