When do you know....?

When do you know it's time to hang up the wrenches and tools and start seeking repair help?

I started wrenching on motorcycles at age 14. Since then, I've repaired and maintained anything except aircraft. I'll be turning 68 next month and am finding repair, just on my small auto fleet, is getting to be a drag. My travel trailer is a love object so that gets the best of attention.

Did anybody older look back and say "Yeah, when I did X, that was the indicator?"

  • If it feels like it is getting to be a drag then I would say it is time to hang up the tools.
I am 69 and still enjoy working on my trailer, my vehicles, my quads and house renovations. Don't plan to quit for quite a while yet. When it gets to be a drag then I will hang up my tools.
  • I'm 20 years your junior and have been wrenching on stuff since I could hold a wrench. I find that there are some things now that I'm not willing to undertake myself. It mostly comes down to time constraints - would I rather spend my limited free time rolling around under the car or doing something else? My dad is 75 and still does all his own work on his cars and house. My younger brother and I help when he asks (which is rare). This past week we've had a lot of snow and ice. I call over there to see if he needs help, but he's got it all covered (much to my mom's dismay).

I guess it comes down to whether or not you enjoy it. If you don't, have someone else do it. I still enjoy working on the older stuff like my RV and wagon, but turn the everyday stuff over to "professionals".
  • Same age and same work as BB_TX. A lot of the ?? you ask is probably determined by what you enjoy doing and not being a drag. My shop is not heated so weather has determined what can be done there in the cold months so I work on the house between trips we take. One thing that I balk @ is buying the computers to diagnose problems with newer vehicles so they go to a shop. Do not think age has anything to do with it and it boils down to enjoyment and self satisfaction. JMHO
  • I work in the trades and will take on anything. That being said I am starting to have the shop work on my trucks.Sometimes you don't feel up to it on the weekends. More to life.
  • Like you, I started at an early age doing my own work of all kinds. Changed out engines in two vehicles back in the 80's. Did all my mechanic work, plumbing work, electrical work, carpentry, painting, you name it. I am now 71. Have not put away the wrenches yet, and no immediate plans to. But I don't do nearly the work I used to. I am just slowly transitioning into less a do-it-yourselfer and only doing those things that hurt less.
