Only time RV'ing is economical is when you turn the key off. So the longer the key is off the more money you will save.
As far as a great way to travel, that depends on how far, terrain, and weather conditions, and the rig you got.
The one thing that RV'ing does have, is the freedom to come and go as you please. Not too many other forms of travel offer that.
Good points. A RV is a house on wheels. Past the fixed cost to purchase they cost very little to keep up when parked. House moving is not cheap these days.
We find with teenagers on a fast moving trip (different location/town each night) the MH just does not make sense in $$$ and stress. Now when it comes to spending four day weekend with relatives the RV parked outside is nice and lowers my stress of sleeping in someone's home.
When you are staying in a low cost CG that is one thing but when you are spending $50+ for an RV park to sleep for a few hours makes WM appeal to us. SUV and sub $100 motels.
As noted over and over there is not one answer on this subject.
Like Burbman if he did not have his TT when he would have spent $$$ on a hotel without the quality he has experienced. At the same time if he had not towed his transmission might still be fine. :)
Actually getting 150K miles out of a hard working transmission is very good.
I think the key is to get out and get away. Our MH experience is not something I would have wanted to have missed with the kids but with them 16 and my physical limitations I do not plan to get another RV should something happen to this one. For the $1000 it costs directly/indirectly annually we can do a week by SUV and nice motels for what it cost us to stay at home due to MH ownership.
We spent $1 a mile on our 8000 cross country two years ago for fuel, food, events and parks which breaks down to $258.06 a day since we were gone 31 days.
Funny part was we did it because we had the MH and seeing the Grand Canyon was the one thing we had to do in the MH. I am sure we would have never got our butts in the SUV and did the same trip.
RV'ing is expensive period. Not RV'ing can be expensive in other ways too. :)
Find your balance and go one way or the other. Our old MH is worth more to the wife as a back up home than a method of travel. RV's have value in different ways to different people.
