Astoria, Oregon which is located at the mouth of the Columbia river was named after John Astor's fur company which did the initial settlement at what is now Astoria, OR in 1811. John Astor's grandson had the tower built in 1926 as a tribute to his grandfather. What you see on the side is a contiuous painting of the hisory of the area from 1811 to 1926. The painting spirals up from the bottom. There is a cast iron starway inside that leads to the observation deck at the top.
