Where, how to store a folding tricycle?

..We like to bring bicycles with us when we camp. Really like riding where ever we go. It used to be that all of us would ride - me, DW, and both the kids. The kids especially, like to ride a lot.

Unfortunately now, DW has got to where she does not want to ride a 2 wheel bicycle anymore. She has been really pushing me to get her a 3 wheel tricycle, something like the folding adult tricycle that Camping World sells. She just has this total 'fear' of toppling over on a 2 wheeler and the damage that will do (that at our age, wouldn't heal quite as fast, haha).

While I really am not crazy about the idea, I'm willing to do it just so she will continue to ride with us (we need the exercise!). The huge dilemma we have that I just cannot find a way around, is where in the heck am I going to stow/carry that tricycle??

We tow a Ford Fusion behind a Motorhome. I use a 4 bike rack on the back of the Fusion (hitch receiver mounted) to carry the bikes. In an effort to avoid a bunch of wasted posts making susggestions that won't work, here's the things I've looked into, tried, that will not work:

1. Tricycle will not go on 4 bike rack we have now on back of the Fusion, as it would take up almost entire rack and other 3 bikes couldnt go on it, then.

2. Cannot mount 2nd bike rack to tow bar or MH hitch receiver on back of MH. The tow bar we use (ReadyBrake) has a brake actuator arm that will get in the way of a bike rack there. Looked at the Blue Ox tow bar mounted unit also, it will not work, either, due to the receiver drop bar we have to use.

3. Tricycle, even folded up, is too big to fit in back seat or trunk of Fusion. Nor will it fit in any storage compartment of the MH. Having 3 wheels just makes it too darn big, haha. Yes, I've measured several times to verify. Do not want to store it inside the MH, either, due to concerns about it scratching things up on its way in, out of the MH.

4. Impossible to mount a bike rack on front of the MH, so it can't go there. Just not a good way to mount anything up there.

5. Looked into, found that they make stability wheels that will mount on any 2 wheel bicycle (basically, 'training wheels' with suspension for adults). DW wants nothing to do with these.

Only other thing I can think of, that have not researched much: Mounting, installing some kind of rack or storage on top of car, that would carry the tricycle. Not sure how I'd go about that, though.

Any idea, suggesions I haven't thought of?

Sounds like you're about out of options....about the only thing left is a Yakima or other rack on top of the Fusion with a cargo basket or something to lash the trike to. Although if this is the trike you are looking at, 63 lbs isn't easy to hoist onto the roof of the Fusion....

Yes, that is one of the trikes we've been looking at, Don. And you're right, the weight of that trike is one of the reasons I haven't looked seriously at a roof rack. It'd be a bear to get it up on the roof of the car.

Option B would be to trade in the Fusion .....

..That would be a not just no, but h*** no, haha. :) Fusion ain't going anywhere, we like it too much. I'll spend $2k on the trike you linked to before I'd do that!

Option C would be to lose the bike rack on the back of the Fusion in favor of towing a small cargo trailer..

Even if NC laws would allow such (which I don't believe they do), the limitation of the Fusion's Class II hitch receiver eliminates that option. Ford does not recommend towing ANYTHING with the Fusion, and because of that, only a Class II receiver can be had for it (strictly intended to be used for a bike rack). Not that I'd ever consider towing doubles like that, anyway. If I was going to tow a trailer, I'd just get a flatbed trailer large enough to put both the Fusion AND the trike on (although that opens up a whole 'nother can of worms that I don't want, either).

The DiBlasi Folding Trike would solve your issues because it collapses side-to-side in addition to front-to-back, so would fit in the back seat of the Fusion....but at $2000 not a cheap solution either.

Thank you, Don, for digging that up! I should have stated in original post, but this is exactly what I have been looking for to solve this problem, but couldn't find anywhere - a tricycle that collapses side-to-side as well as front to back. That way it could fit in the back seat of the Fusion or possibly the trunk. I like it, except for that huge price tag!

..Think I'll just have to keep looking, see if anyone else makes a trike that can fold up like that for a little more reasonable price..

  • So it looks like a few options here are he same as I was thinking, roof rack for the car, trailer for the car and bikes or a new vehicle maybe a truck to store the bikes. Good luck

Option B would be to trade in the Fusion for an Escape or similar toad where you could fold down the seats and make room for the trike inside.

Option C would be to lose the bike rack on the back of the Fusion in favor of towing a small cargo trailer that would fit 3 bikes and a trike. Not sure what NC laws are regarding double towing.

Seriously, if it won't fit in, on, or around the MH, then you are stuck looking at a solution involving the toad....

Well it sounds like you've given this a lot of thought and explored many options. How about purchasing a padded cover for the 3 wheeler and storing it in the MH.

    Tought of that, too. :)

Yes, if we could get a padded cover/bag for the 3 wheeler, that'd reduce the risk of scratching things up inside. However, problem is that with our MH when traveling with slideouts in, there is no good place to put something that big inside.

Can't put it under the dinette, as kids like sometimes to sit there when on the road. Same thing with the couch. Not even close to enough floorspace to just put it on the floor somewhere.

Only possibility would be to put it on the bed in the back or on one of the kid's bunks in the back. However, you could not get it back there or take it out unless the rear slideout was extended (hallway going back there would be way too narrow otherwise). Thats not to mention the PITA it'd be to wrestle that thing through the door and up the stairs (...and 'guess who' would always get that task, haha).
