I started as a kid in boarding school in a military surplus canvas tent made of two halves that buttoned together (ach boy carried one half.) Wind, rain, mosquitos getting in, musty odor and no floor on the tent were some of the drawbacks but I had no choice, but it was fun.
Many years later as an adult I bought a small nylon tent. Much better because it kept out the rain, wind, and mosquitos, and was much later to carry.
Have only done tent camping. No Rv.
This was at
Linton Hall, a military school for boys grades 3 to 8. Only the older kids got to go camping.
