Which WD hitch do I need?

Not sure if the truck matters but here goes.

2012 Ram 1500 GVWR 9600# +/-

2012 Crossroads LHT27RL

Supposedly has a hitch weight of 687 and a as is weight of 69000ish. Dealer picked it up at my house last month to perform repairs inflicted by hail etc. Apparently they make it a point to weigh them for some odd reason or another.

Anyhow I was on a website (E-trailer) Looking at the Blue Ox hitches and while they look interesting I noticed something. How do they actually mount because it looks like it goes right into the receiver of the truck?

I am a total newb with this thing and had only pulled it with my 3/4 ton truck which Dodge purchased back from me. I did pull it with the 1500 but it was riding about 2-3.5" low in the rear.

Trying to get all the ducks down and to the house before I get home from Pakistan next month and would really like to go on a bit of a trip with the girls.

Hitch I was looking at.

Blue Ox

Also I have been towing it with no fluids in it. Would it help bring the tongue up a bit to fill the freshwater tank which is near the rear bumper on this TT? 40 Gallons
  • I see how it attaches, just couldn't figure out where the ball went until I went to the mfg website.

Which one is better Blue Ox or the Equalizer hitch? Been running some google fu on certain parts of it and have figured out which one of either I need. I know this might turn into a ford/chevy/dodge kind of question. The Equalizer seems to be the best seller on the Hitchweb website.
  • I would get 1000lb bars for it. Your hitch weight will only go up from the dry or empty weight you have now. You should have 10-15% of the trailer weight on the hitch. What you have now is slightly less than 10% of the trailer weight. Do not add weight to the rear of the trailer.

Yes, the shank that the hitch head is attached to does go directly into the trucks receiver. It is held in there by a pin that goes through a hole in the shank and receiver tube.
