Just because the "stuff" is yours doesn't mean you can't make yourself, and others, sick. Anerobic bacteria that thrives in your gut can make you extremely ill if it makes it into your upper GI tract. Just because the bacteria came from you doesn't make you immune to it's ability to make you very ill. Your mother was correct in making you wash your hands after using the restroom.
