Why check temp on tires? Really necessary?

I check tire temps (between the treads) and hub temps on our 5vr at each rest stop. Quick and easy to do. I look for differences between tires/hub temps on same side.
I also check the truck tire and rotor temps too.
Does it help........hasn't hurt, gives me comfort in knowing (30 yrs. of taking temps, readings, pressures etc. on the job) and makes it look like to those watching that I know what I'm doing :B
