Anode rod necessary ?
I only use my 22ft travel trailer on weekends, 2 or 3 nights. 6gal water heater. If I drain my hot water tank after every use, is an anode rod really necessary ?

- No, you can let the tank desolve. Maybe a short nipple, a "Tee" and a valve at the bottom of tee?
- I would keep the anode and leave the water in the tank between trips. Do it for the same reasons you dont drain your home WH when you leave.
Also, unless you suck the water out, even after you drain it there will be a puddle in the bottom. That water will work on eating the botom of the tank since the anode isn't in-play. dougbo4 wrote:

Yes, your tank is coated steel. Anode rod gets attacked instead of your tank.- Kind of depends on the maker of your heater. If an Atwood, then no anode rod is necessary.
If a Suburban, then I would use use one because eventually the inside will corrode due to the water being present, even if only part time. The one that comes with the Suburban should last quite a long time though. Just inspect it when you pull it out to drain the heater. When it gets to looking like a rough piece of thin pencil then replace it.
Barney - I bought one of those Anode rods with a petcock in it. Works reasonably well

What about during the time you are USING the water heater?

YES ------ if it is a Suburban Water Heater the anode rod is Necessary.- Yes. For the small price of the anode rod keep it. I have gone as much as 3 years on one anode, very little damage. It only dissolved at the end of the 3rd year.
- why wouldnt you install the anode rod?
put one in and dont empty your heater until winterization
