Water like that might not kill us but I don't want to worry about what it's doing to my camper. Filters are pretty cheap insurance.
This is an important thing to consider even if you don't drink the water. We've had our string filter plug up with sand (from work on the campground water lines that were not properly flushed when the job was finished) after just one tank fill. We've also has a spider and lizard end up in the filter - our fault because we forgot to let the water run a bit before connecting to the hose.
We do drink our water but in addition to a cheap string filter to catch debris we also have a .5 micron filter on our kitchen cold water line.
