Our kids are an extension of us . They go where we go......perfect
But at what risk/cost? I understand what you are saying, but I'd rather put off a trip than have a bored, miserable child with me.
Been there 3 times. I would definitely hold off until he's a fair amount older, closer to 6-8 at a minimum. By that age they are mobile, can understand danger much better, can take an interest especially if you get them a camera of some sort, and can just start to appreciate Yellowstone's wonder. I'd settle on a place or two closer that's geared towards younger kids. Yes, a bummer a times (been there!) but a happy kids means happy parents. You want fond memories, not what-were-we-thinking memories.
