Mom of 6 here. My youngest just turned 21 months and is more of a handful than my other children..by FAR! Very adventurous and daring child. Needs to be near me ALL the time (which is good due to his adventures).
I camp often by myself with all the kids, the dog, the cat. We bike everywhere and hike everywhere. Other than the obvious necessities you will need anyplace you go for a day, here are the must haves that makes my camping life easier with the baby:
1.Comfortable carry pack so I can carry him on my back while hiking someplace strollers cant go or too dangerous for him to walk.
2.Playpen for when I'm cooking or setting up. Some places it's too risky and he's either in my arms or in the playpen.
3. Rugged umbrella stroller (folds tiny but has bigger wheels for sandy areas. Also can hang diaper back on back of it without tipping over).
4. Diaper bag that carries on back like a packback.
5. $7 inflatable baby pool. Put small amount of water in it, sit in there with him, and he wont think about getting into anything else. lol.
6. Bubbles...lots and lots of bubbles!!!
7. Bike trailer (if you like to bike) ( get a double for extra bags).
I'm one of those "nervous" moms that sees danger lurking everywhere. Getting an RV vs. tent camping made my life easier. Your child is at risk for danger anywhere. It's up to us to be smart about things. Honestly, parking lots with people in a hurry, backing up and checking their phones at the same time, worry me more than a campground.
Another thought...if you don't start the adventures with your kids while they are young, it's going to be so much harder to get them used to the drive, and staying at foreign areas when they're older. At 18 months, they still want to be near mom/dad. At 3, they want to run away from mom/dad. :) you wont regret exploring with him/her!
