Will work for Free :)

As most of us have in the course of our lives, We are contemplating a change of venue. We currently live in Manitoba, Canada and have been tossing around the idea of hitting the road for a couple of years to see what there is to see. We are not millionaires but live comfortably now and would have some savings to rely on to travel for a few years. We would like to extend those savings..

so.. Here's the question...

We don't want to get paid. We'd like to work for exchange of a parking space, electricity and possibly food/water if the deal permits..
We're thinking along the lines of farming, construction, renovations, yard work, house work, etc. etc. Our general labor for the purpose of seeing U.S. and Canada..

If I paint your house, I park in your yard for a week. It's harvest time, temporary work for temporary stay. We have our own sleeping quarters, transportation, etc. but just need a place to park.

Does such a Website or forum exist to connect the workers to the providers?

  • Under the letter of the law, hiring you would put a private employer in jeopardy of being in violation of several federal laws.
The employer would be in violation of minimum wage laws
The employer would be in violation of laws regarding the hiring of foreign workers
Both of those violations can carry severe financial penalties and even criminal charges for the employer.
Do businesses ignore those laws and hire people in your situation? absolutely, it is not an issue not actively pursued unless there are complaints.
Should businesses hire as you propose? Legally no, morally it is a bit ambiguous. Those laws are there to protect American workers, every worker hired by companies circumventing those laws do some harm to the workforce. Will the US economy collapse and unemployment skyrocket if a business took you up on your terms? No! So it is really comes down to whether or not you are comfortable violating the laws you agree to when you enter this country.
  • Check out volunteering at the escapees CARE in Livingston Tx
  • If you are a member of Workcamper.com, they have a section where you can post looking for what you are wanting. You make the post, and potential "employers" can see it and contact you. Also there are private campgrounds that want volunteers for work campers. We worked at one last summer in the Wisconsin Dells, we worked (not hard), in exchange for our campsite. Also on volunteer.gov you can look for what state you want to work in, and it will give you federal, state & some county campgrounds looking for volunteers.

Check out WWOOF for temporary farm work in exchange for housing.

For construction, painting, etc. I don't know of a site but would love to hear if you find one!

I can recommend Craigslist 'gigs' section for finding temporary work, but I think those are usually unskilled jobs.
  • Camp hosting is a great way to extend your money. As state park camp hosts we are asked for a 30 day commitment. For that we get a full hookup site and are asked for 20 hours per week per person. Many of us put in far more than that, but do it for the fun of it, not the pay. Being from Canada should post no problems as far as government is concerned. Your not working for pay, so come and have fun.
  • Hi,

    There are various work-camper resources.

Here is my favorite website for finding places to stay:

https://freecampsites.net/ and low cost places to stay

  • There are lots of free camping options in the US. Here are some ideas...

    Walmart (see yahoo group)
    State Park (MN) campground host
    boondockerswelcome.com
    BLM land.

Camping book on sites under $15 (ck Amazon)

    Food should be thesame.

Gas is $2.59 or less in US.

    Go for it!
