Winter Underground Storage in SW Pennsylvania

After all the work and effort in getting my 5th wheel back up to snuff I'm not sure I want to leave it outside all winter here in SW PA. I replaced a section of the sidewall, new cooling unit on frig, new awning, and a new vinyl plank floor.

I found two maybe three underground storage facilities that cost wise seem reasonable but never having stored in a limestone mine before was wondering what to be concerned about. The temperature stays around 52 degrees all year round. There appears that there is more humidity in the mine. Don't know about rodents or anything else.

Has anyone stored their RV in an underground limestone mine before? What advice can you provide?

Here are the three places:

Toy's Underground Storage

Brady's Bend Underground Storage

Wampum Underground Warehouse

Has anyone ever used on of these places? Were you happy or not? Would you do it again?

If anyone knows of any other protected storage around the Pittsburgh PA area please let me know.

Thanks!

Dave

In my part of the country, we also have an enormous underground facility. These are a few of the things that made me steer clear !

    1. Must have all propane professionally drained from system.
    2. They park your unit and store it themselves. (don't like someone taking my coach ,parking it and not sure whether or not it is shutdown properly.
    3. No jacks down.
    4. Comes back covered in a layer of sandstone dust !

I will be looking for something different, but it sure would be nice to not have to winterize for a coucle of months !

    OP Here,

Two of the three sites have responded and here is the general response.

Only external propane tanks have to be removed. Internal are no problem. One site said to remove my tanks (5th wheel with tanks in a storage compartment) and the other said no.

Both asked that gasoline / fuel tank be less than half full. Not an issue for me.

Both sites said I drive it in park it ESCORTED BY STAFF. One site did offer valet service for a fee where they park your RV.

Both cautioned about humidity. It is less humid in winter but it can run between 50 to 60%. One site sell Humidry complete in a two bucket set for $10. Both sites said no reports of issues with electronics.

Both sites say they are rodent free and have no issues.

Nothing regarding jacks from either site.

I can access my RV anytime during normal business hours. (9 - 5)MUST BE ESCORTED.

The escort part actually makes me feel better as I know someone will not be roaming around looking for something to snatch. Both also have security cameras.

Both have a height requirement of 12 feet which also is not a problem for me.

Temperature stays around 52 degrees so no need for pink stuff. I will still blow out my lines and drain all tanks.

Both strongly suggested storing the RV when it is clean and dry.I did not ask or get anything on the dust issue. Every spring when stored outside for the winter my 5th wheel was filthy and required a really good cleaning. If all I have to do is clean off the dust then that doesn't seem to bad. Getting the black streaks off in the spring is always so much fun!

Regarding the cost, it is based on length and my 32 foot 5th wheel will cost $44 to $46 a month (5 month minimum) depending on which site I choose. My outdoor storage costs me $45 a month and that's a bargain as other places near me charge up to $75 a month.

Am I overlooking anything? I know that I will not be using the 5th Wheel between November and March although I can get it out if needed. Just seems like better protection then leaving it outside.

    Thanks!

  • If I needed winter storage, I'd use one of those. Heck, I paid more for two months outside storage than the cost for a season for my size TT on the first link. If covered in dust, then put a cover on it.
  • How do you do it w/o jacks down ? Class A or C I guess ? How does that work with a TT or FW ?
