"Winterizing Tips"

A few more questions from an old time RVer with a newbie Rig.

Our last RV was kept outside for 50 years. It was a basic unit with no amenities. For our new 2015 model:

1. Should we buy a cover and cover it over winter? (Its a Jayco with a rubber roof)

2. Should the battery be disconnected? I don't really want to haul it home 100 miles and recharge it over winter)

Thanks in advance again...

  • Sun and it's UV rays is one of the worst enemies of anything sitting outside, that's why I pay a bit extra for covered storage. Old units left outside show this.
  • Charge them, disconnect them and leave them. They will be fine as long as there is no load on them. That has ben what I've done with my boat and tractor batteries for the last 35+ years. No one at our marina humps the batteries out of the bilge of the boat, down an extension ladder and through the storage yard.

Last winter left Nov 15, came back Apr 15. The batteries were fine - as always.
  • Install a master battery disconnect switch and a small solar panel. You'll never have to move the battery again and it will always be charged when you are ready to go. If you have any type of security issues where you have it stored, remove it and bring it home, maintain it on a trickle charger.
  • Ordinarily I'm a fan of covering in the right situation, but if the tt is far away and you can't keep an eye on it, I would say don't cover. Lots of folks don't, without problems. And yes, take the battery out.
  • I've never covered mine. No problems to date.
Remove the battery and keep it in the garage at home. I use a trickle charger on mine.
  • Don't cover it. Best to store the battery in a warm place. If it goes dead, it could freeze and crack or warp the plates.
  • No 1: Yes, and cover that with a sturdy tarp too.
No 2: Absolutely, charge it fully and then disconnect it completely.
