Wiring a new Curt Receiver

I took everyone's advice in a previous question about buying a replacement receiver for my new used 2004 8.1L Suburban. I purchased the 15234 Curt.

I plan to have our local trailer fix-it shop do the install.

The Burb's current oem receiver has a wiring harness, which the new Curt does not. Do I need to order another part for the wiring?

Confused, help!
  • You may be able to simply disconnect the wiring from the current receiver and attach it to the new receiver or somewhere else under the vehicle. I cleaned and repainted the receiver on my Envoy, and the wiring harness comes right off.
  • Thanks for the reply...BUT it looks to me that the "plug" is welded onto the receiver. I don't see how to remove the "plug" from the receiver, they look completely integrated. I am I making any sense?

Furthermore, the curt receiver I ordered is just smooth, metal, I don't see a place to attach a "plug".
  • More...I guess I want to know...is this how receivers normally come shipped? I guess I just thought it would come with the "plug" already attached.

The fix-it shop quoted me a very reasonable price to unbolt my old receiver and attach the new one. He told me it would take about 30 minutes. Is it going to cost a lot more to weld on a new wiring "plug"?

I am planning on camping next weekend and if I need to order a new part, I need to do is ASAP so that it will arrive early in the week.

    Thanks!
  • OEM's include the bracket for the plug, but most after market do not, as they
do not know where you want it, need it...nor what kind of plug you want to
    install

Here is a link to how I added a plug bracket (they come with the plug and if
you already have the plug, you can purchase just the bracket) to my OEM receiver

That era, GMT400, GM full sized still had a traditional design receiver so it
should be very similar to yours

and this is the image of how it came out and during the install (drilling)

  • Thanks for the photos, but please tell me what I need to order to go with the new Curt I ordered.

I am not a mechanic, I don't know anything about cars. I have a 2004 Suburban. It has a factory installed OEM receiver with a "outlet/plug/socket" integrated with the receiver for the trailer wiring. Based on the input I received on this forum with regard to the current receiver being unsafe, I ordered the Curt replacement. The curt Does not have any place to plug in the trailer. I intend to have a mechanic replace the receiver with the one I have purchased. My question is...do I need to buy something to attach to the curt so that I can plug the trailer in? If so, what? Can someone please give me a part number? The mechanic will do the install.
  • Yes, you need to buy the bracket that fits your plug.

Most auto supply stores have a small section and it should have the most common
plug. There also should be a bracket by itself for sale, as they get banged up
often and folks replace them often

Then print out the above pic's for your mechanic, along with the bracket or
leave it to them to buy the bracket and mark up a bit of profit for themselves

I did NOT thread the receiver flange because lazy and didn't want to go back
to the garage for my tape set. So clearance hole in the receiver flange and
double nutted a screw (think 10-32)

Your mechanic should understand all this
  • Forgot, your mechanic may have to re-route the harness and notice I insulated
mine with old rubber garden hose. I never toss garden hoses and use them for
this kind of stuff and for staking trees/shrubs/etc
  • etrailer sells your model of hitch here.

On that same page they recommend this wiring mount/adapter.

It looks like the wiring harness will unplug from your current trailer plug and plug into the back of this which you can mount wherever it will fit. They even have a video (which I did not watch) that shows how they installed it onto a Silverado of the same generation as your Suburban. It should mount the same since back then the Suburban and Silverado had the same hitches and rear bumpers.
