Worst dealer offer ever?

Thought I would share this, since it seems so bizarre...
Was at a dealer the other day and for fun looking at new trailers, as I always pick up an idea or two looking at newer trailers. Mine is fine and only 1.5 years old, and I don't really need to upgrade, but if an out of this world amazing deal was to happen, well..... So the salesman says "let's run the numbers" on one I particularly liked. Sure, why not. Never know.
I must say, however, my skepticism and general dislike of salesman and rv/auto dealerships might have been apparent.
He takes the info on my current trailer as a trade, and comes back with the most ridiculous numbers I have ever seen. Here they are, using round numbers.
97k for new (msrp by the way). 31k for trade. Tax 3k. Payoff 31k. Bottom line, 82k, after giving them 20K CASH, and my trailer.
No discount off MSRP by the way. (I get that, there is negative equity in the trade)
So I play with the numbers a bit. IF I HAD NO TRADE AT ALL, walked in and handed him 20k, after taxes, etc the bottom line would have been the same. (97k-20k=77k, plus tax etc,=82K)
So the way I see it basically, the "deal" valued my trade in at nearly 0 dollars, correct?.
I have never understood how dealers play with their numbers, but somehow this has got to be the worst "deal" ever.
Am I missing something here (please educate me if so) or is that just a dealer's way of saying we just don't want your business?
I did walk out, since that was their "best" deal.
  • And actually our dealer told us they don't prefer cash...they prefer if you finance so they make a bit off the financing as well. So if you finance it thru the dealer and perhaps get a bit better deal, then you could immediately pay off the loan.
  • True, very true.

Just occurred to me that if it was a cash deal, msrp probably wouldn't be the starting price, and it might have turned out different.

Oh and another thing, when I asked why they wanted 20k down, they said the banks required it. I've never put a dime down on an auto or rv purchase.

Never was any good at math.... :)
