At the youthful :) age of 63 and after 14 years fulltiming, I came to the conclusion long ago that most of what bothers many people just doesn't matter to me. Life is way too short. I'm a happy camper and am determined to stay that way!
I think it's key that the OP said he can't open his door the whole way. What happens when he scratches his door or the slide and now the other guy is mad - and unpredictable. Sad that one has to worry about he would do instead of a calm request but it's become the world we live in.
Glad OP talked to manager and hope it works out.
