Would you shovel snow to camp?

We don't get a lot of snow around here, but with this recent storm, we have a campground 45 minutes north of us in the mountains that got about 10".

I look at all the photos here with folks camping in the snow and it looks gorgeous and like an adventure!

Here's the kicker. I called the campground and they said their roads are plowed and things are starting to melt. However, they have no way of plowing camp sites. He said we'd have 10" of slush on our site that we'd have to deal with.

I'm not experienced in "snow". What's it like to show up and have to shovel off a site (with regular flat shovels...no snow shovel)? How long does it take to clear 10" out enough for under the awning and around a campfire? I imagine with the melting the cleared part would stay wet.

Is it worth it for the experience? Want to go this Saturday morning and stay one night.

  • I have shoveled to set up a tent but that is about it.
  • A few years back we were camping in the mtns. and a storm blew in.
    Dumped 12" of snow.
Had a Doc. appointment I had to get to.
Me and two CG workers shoveled snow from front of truck out to CG road..roughly 5' and width of truck. Only took 3 of us about 20 mins. of hard shoveling.

Would I shovel to GO camping.......NO

    what he said! :)
  • The wetter the snow, the harder it is to shovel. You may be able to unhook and use your truck to run over the snow to pack it down and then rehook. Just a thought...

I think it is cool to camp in the snow (no pun intended), but I am staying put with 16" on the ground and more coming down.
