Yellowing Sink......How to restore?

My trailer is coming up on 10 years old. This KZ product has been virtually trouble free from day one. Very pleased with the fit, finish and quality of this trailer.

With its age, I am starting to go through and refresh some of the items in need. I’ve pulled off / taped off and painted some of the plastic door frames and vent trim that has yellowed over the years. Looks much better. Now, I am trying to figure out how to restore the bathroom sink. The kitchen sink is porcelain and still looks fresh and new. The bathroom sink is plastic and is getting very yellow.

Any suggestions on how to restore it? I’m afraid that if I sand it down and paint it, the paint will just peel or chip in short order.

What have you done to fix the yellowing in your sink?

Thank you

  • OP here. Thank you for some outstanding suggestions. I already had a bottle of the cleaner "Awesome" that I have yet to use. Sounds like it's some pretty strong stuff. I originally bought it to spray on my painted aluminum fishing boat to try and get rid of the lake scum that was left on it from last season.

I will bring some bleach (also to sanitized my water system)as well as the Awesome to see which one works best.

I will post back my results in a couple of weeks when I can get down to the camper for a weekend.

Have you tried bleach? On our porcelain sink the bottom will slowly turn yellow. I fill the bottom with warm water, add bleach and let it sit for awhile. Comes out sparkling clean and white.

In your case I would try White vinegar. That stain sounds like you have iron in your water.

You probably also have an ion stained/clogged faucet aerator.

Since it already looks bad, give "LA's Totally Awesome" cleaner on it. It will whiten exterior plastic parts nicely.

Never used it on a sink, but it cleaned and whitened exterior plastic nicely.
  • Little Boy Blue bluing works great.

It is the same Indigo dye used in blue jeans.
  • Awesome, from the dollar store. Just make sure you put it on evenly, it will cause streaks. You can also use it on the outside on the refrigerator vents, white door window frame to remove yellowing. When using it outside tape a rag or paper towels underneath so it will not run down the sidewalls, again causes streaks that do not come off. Really strong stuff, try it diluted first.

  • In our older rig, we couldn't get a sink to fit. DH lightly sanded the old sink and used a white epoxy spray. It worked fine until I dropped something in it and scratched it.....he just lightly sanded that area and re-sprayed.
