Yet Another Tow Capacity Question

Greetings. Sorry for the repetative nature of this topic, but no matter what the search parameters, "Tow Capacity", "2006 GMC", "3/4 Ton Diesel" I can't find the info I'm looking for.

In a nutshell. I own a 2006 GMC 3/4 Ton 4X4 Crew Cab, LLY. Diesel of course. My first 5er was and still is a 1998 Aljo. 25 ft. and about 7300 lbs. fully loaded for a trip. Great, faithful friend that we're ready to grow out of. We are looking at the Dutchman Voltage. 3105 but I really perfer the 3200 Epic package. The salesmen all tell me I can tow these two 5th wheels but I am overwhelmed by the numbers. On paper, I would think that if I fully loaded it with water and a razor and all our stuff, we would be at my max of 14,200 tow wieght. The 3105 was 11,504 lbs. The 3200 is 11,600. Say 1,000 lbs of water, 1000 lbs. of razor (worst case) and us two with our items, and I see us right at 14,200. Does anyone else tow this close to the "end" of their limits and if so, what's this like? Recommended?? If the wife gets her way and we get this, I plan to add air bags and extra tranny and rear diff. cooling.

I know this is long but I wanted to explain the story as fully as I can. Of course I won't usually haul 100 gal of water and such but still, we'd be right close to the max. Thanks in advance for any replies and or info.

Regards.
  • You likely will not have enough payload for the pin weight but without actual payload and pin weight info that is only my opinion.
  • Had a 2004 LLY once upon a time. GVWR is 9200 pounds. What does your truck scale loaded ready for a trip?
What I will tell you is this..... Originally bought a fifth wheel with a GVWR of 13,750 pounds to tow around. After the first trip to the scales, i figured out the truck scaled 10,500 pounds with the fiver in tow. After a fashion the truck would straight line pull fine. Plenty of power for that. Where it got squirlly was in the mountains. Add in the LLY's overheating issues when pushed to the max and that truck lasted three years with that much load before I could get rid of it for a dually. Best thing I ever did was get a truck capable of handling the load instead of trying to band aid a marginal truck any longer.
  • Yes, I am aware of those numbers but I don't intend to load to the GVWR of 16,500. As I mentioned, it would be within the limits of the my max tow rate. I agree that the main concern would be pin weight however. I'm hoping for reports from those who may be actually towing something similar to what I outline and what the real world experience is. I don't want to digress into a numbers discussion. While that is really the yard stick by which we have to measure, I can't believe that we are limited to an RV that is no real upgrade. When I look at the 28 ft eclipse and the like, we are not attracted to it. The only thing attractive is the 8800 lb. dry weight.
  • GVWR for them is around 16500, I believe that is way above your limitations with a 2500 series truck. So you will be somewhere between meaningless dry weight, 11500, and max weight, 16500.

With 2500 series GMC, 2006 model, your limitation will be pin weight.
