50 years from being "new"! These type intersections and even some variations have been used in Michigan since the 1960's. Back then it was labeled "The Michigan Turn" and some states still use the same name for them today. They are safer but can be a pain with during heavy traffic times due to long backups. They just finished last fall revising the Apple Ave/US-31 in Muskegon approaches and "U" turns to over a 1/2 mile distance from actual intersection because of so many turning vehicles not being able to get off the traveled lanes of US-31 during rush hours and being stuck and not able to cross into the median totally due to backups. Many other intersections in the state have been and are also being revised the same way too.
