You wanna live where ????

We love where our S&B is (Anacortes, WA). Pleasant climate - rarely over 75F in summer, rarely below 40F for a daytime high in winter (not this week though!) Even if we decided to go full-timing, this would still be "home" even if we didn't have a home here!

Sure, it can get 1200' overcast. 1/2 mile visibility, rain and fog for several weeks at a time, but we're originally from NW UK, so we're used to that! Better that than freezing your tail off in negative Fahrenheit temps for weeks on end.

Our second grand-daughter is a student at the University of Montana. Their daytime high a few days ago was -8 degrees. I was telling my sister about it on the phone to England and she said "That doesn't sound too bad." I said "Fahrenheit" - sudden realization!

Also, in some states residence property taxes may depend upon how long you've been around and have stayed around.

We have very low property taxes in our retirement home - way lower than more recent neighbors around us - because of assesed value containment laws. This situation in CA really helps with retirement expenses ... but you have to have stayed in your home the whole time from your working years and on into retirement.

Here is a good list that rates states based on several criteria. You can pick what's important to you. Climate, taxes(property, sales, income, etc.), health care and other things. I remember looking at the site a while back. I think it was Washington and Oregon where one charged sales tax on groceries but no property taxes and the other state was the other way around. So live on the border in one and buy groceries in the other. :)

We are where we are. It get's relatively cold here in the winter, and can get hot in the summer, and we get taxed on a lot of stuff.

However, were we live now has one thing no other place has, our granddaughter.

That's not to say that for the next few years, we will not pull the TT down to Florida for a couple of months to escape the worse of the cold.

Substitute "Alaska" for Colorado and "Texas" for Arizona and this is my plan, not sure about the timing though. :(

Tax-friendly is one measurement criteria. Climate, access to quality health care, proximity to family, and cost of housing are a few more. And coming from New York State - 2nd Amendment friendly.

Taxes don't matter. Cool summer and warm winter - PERIOD.

Western Washington State.

It is the nicest place in the world during July and August.

Not so much the rest of the year.
But having children, grand children and great grand children around helps in the rain and cold of the other 10 months.

We're planning on going back to Co. (Denver or front range) in 3-4 yrs. Our sentence in Az will be served... yippeee!! Cold won't be so bad if I don't have to work outside anymore. This heat really rocked me, last summer. Fixing an AC on the west side of a bldg, on fresh blacktop, on that record hot Saturday... OMG, 126 degrees! Our Az. properties will be paid off next summer and we're thinking of buying land in Co. to build on. We will be looking into the ins and outs of that venture. Craig

When somebody says "Whut t'heck is THAT thang?", I am almost home.
As for residency, I think I will stay a resident of Montana. The PERMANENT vehicle registration is a good enough reason. ANY vehicle 11 years old or older, ALL motorcycles, trailers, and boats (that includes street legal ATVs) can have PERMANENT registration!
Yeah, filing the income tax forms is a nuisance, but I have done it all my life, and it isn't all that complicated, especially with the computer program.
