Ok, I do not know how your system is wired.. You said you added a element, Was it a HOTT ROD (I think not since they do not have indicator lights).
On my Atwood water heater there are two switches, one for Gas, one for Electric, and 3 lights, One for Gas, One for electric, and one for FAULT (Which normally only works to show failure of gas to ignight, but it can be set by other things as well).
The lights (all 3 of them) are 12 volt devices and the "Gas/Electric" lights only indicate the position of the switch, nothing more..
Did your electric mod involve a 12 volt switch and relay?
