Roy, I think you have it figured out. Run the genset early, to 80% if you have sun, and let the panels do the rest. Or to 90% if you don't have sun, like your normal procedure except earlier, and take what you can get in the way of top-off from the panels. I'm just beginning at this myself. It doesn't get any easier than sitting in the desert at 72 degrees and full sun all day.
We just spent 3 nights up at elevation in the pine trees around Prescott and Payson. No sun on our sites, so roof mounted panels would have done very little. But the portables would have been able to pick up some sun here and there. I didn't bother because we were on the move. Which illustrates the upside and downside of both types of setups.
