Because it is typical residential cable
(a.k.a. Romex or NM-B) the industry refers to this as 10/2
(w/ground).
To confuse everyone,
your input cord or extension cord for a 30A service is referred to as 10/3 !
Yes, it would be best to install a junction box, but the problem you will have is that you need 3"-6" of cable from one end or the other in order to complete the splice and secure itinside the box.
