12V pump on idle??

Hey, went camping for the first this year, noticed this problem when we got the trailer last year, but though I figured it out...well I didn't. The Situation went like this...the pump did not get to pressure, it would sit and cycle...yes 12V is at the pump (pump is running). Took the bypass cap off (to winterize) and put a water hose to that...thought maybe it needed primed??? Just put water all over the place, pump did take some water, but not much. Cussed at it, hit it with a hammer--ok tapped it while it was running, tried the water bypass again...no go. DD thought to turn the power off and...she did that 5-6 times.. still no go.

morning time, went to take the pump out (we were going into town anyway) decided to try the pump one more time...it fired up and had pressure...and when it gets to "pressure" it slows down and like idles..cycles really slow..almost like a leak...it had done that when we first got the trailer last year, I thought the diaphragms were dry..PO did not use trailer very much. I let it sit and idle-cycle for a couple of minutes...then it got to pressure and turned off--stopped running. Turned on the furthest faucet and lots of pressure, pump turned on, I turned off the faucet and pump went into the cycle phase....it will cycle for 2-5 minutes and eventually turn off--get to pressure... It will sit at pressure for as long as we don't touch the faucets...so there is no leak in the system....

sorry for the long drawn out story, now, question...has anyone had this problem before???

  • WOW RJsfishin is good!

Did not ask the OP what make\model the pump is and knows that their is an adjustment thats NOT for the in and out pressure!

Could you let us know the make/model of that pump? I'm courious about this allen screw adjustment RJsfishin spoke of.

I have a Shureflow pump in my 93 Pace arrow. I believe it's original. It has a screen on the intake side that should be cleaned ocasionally. I did have to replace a coule parts but it's still going strong.

The backside of the citywater connection has a check valve and could possibly start leaking. It's nice to have a male plug that can be screwed on that city water connector to keep it from leaking.

    If your pump keeps running it's either;
    Bad vales on pump.
Bad check-valve on city water connector.
    Hot water heater by-pass valve.
    Water line leak.

Keep a close eye on that water system. Leak could get interior wet!

Keep us posted on your findings.

Oh, I'm NOT one of those "Know it All's" LOL
  • Not one correct answer in the whole bunch !

There is an adjustable allen screw somewhere near where the wires connect to the pump. Just adjust it. It works every time.
Now, don't a bunch of knowitalls jump in and say that is the adjustment for the in and out pressure, because its not. And you will find this adjustment only on very late model pumps.
  • thanks everyone..will take it apart this weekend..can't go camping anyway..so might as well work on it...

also I have looked into a variable speed pump or a fixed speed and accumulator tank...not clear on how a variable speed pump on a on off system will work..there is no potentiometer on the system...so if you can send a link, would appreciate it.

were you thinking of the one way check valve just before the pump? like in the diagram RoyB posted

Mine has no filter, this I know...I installed a flush valve, for winterizing. What type of filter are being used on these systems.

Here is a typical water flow diagram... Might give some clues.

Of course you only use your water pump when using the fresh water tank. If you are connected to city water the pump is not necessary. My trailer has a water pump switch to use to turn it off with. Not a good idea to run the pump if there is no water in the fresh water tank.

    just my thoughts

  • Also - the inlet side of the pump should have a filter - if that gets clogged up then water doesn't get to the pump.
  • I had a brand new RV do this to me. There's probably something in the pump itself causing it - all it takes is a tiny piece of foreign matter. Take the head of the pump apart and rinse all the parts off with water and reassemble.
  • Might as well use this as an excuse to buy yourself a variable speed water pump or a fixed speed + an accumulator tank. This will provide a lot quieter use.
