Current electrical code requires the GFCI in the circuit even if you don't see it in the box. If the campground has old wiring and does not update any part of it I believe they don't have to come up to code until they do.
If there is a GFCI anywhere in any circuit used the Y connectors will trip it immediately and there is no way around that. The last time I was able to use mine was when we were in a park where the 50 was not working properly and I used the 30 amp in my box and ran an extension from the 30 amp in the site next door. I still didn't have 50 amp service but as long as I limited each leg to 20-25 amps I was OK.
