1964 Dodge D100 steering problem

Thanks everyone Great information always from this forum.

As soon as I am through with my other little project of changing the rubber roof
on my fifth wheel I will first check the steering RAG then jack the beast up and try to identify any wore out parts.

Keep the suggestions coming and yes I am in Northern California ( Watsonville )

I have the sales contract where My Parents purchased the vehicle for $2,400 cash in 1964 from Spense Peoples a Dodge dealer in Sebastopol California
( I paid a bit more for my 2500 2013 Ram CTD )

I was intrigued, tried to look up Parts and Images. I don't trust the Images because it isn't always clear what they are actually OF.

In Parts, it does appear to have that fabric "rag" coupler from steering wheel shaft to steering gear box. A good first suspect.

Looks like a single I-Beam axle with King Pins. Inexpensive parts, probably not too hard to change. Then apparently in addition to a Pitman Arm on the Gear Box, a Center Link with an Idler Arm on the passenger side, Inner and Outer Tie Rod Ends with Adjust Sleeves.

At least it seems so. We had an early B-Series Dodge Van, and it used TWO Idler arms. If they were the least bit worn, steering got very loose. This D100 doesn't seem to be set up that way...Good!

IF it has a steering RAG.. a web type belt material between 2 flanges on the steering shaft. just forward of the firewall .. it will ROT, and steering will be all over the place.

and that was used before collapsing steering columns.. as a vibration dampener.

Hot Rod shops and older small repair shops should be able to help.
Some of US old guys are still working for a living.
so yes I USED to work on the D100 .. but I no longer have the old truck manuals... still have the car ones . checked last night.

the 64 D 100 came with the slant 6, straight 6 and 1 V8.

and Autozone still list parts for this truck.

If you are in Northern California near the Bay area I have a Mopar shop. We repair all years. Your problem may be a pitman arm or idler arm. PM for assistance.

If the suspension is tight it could well be the steering box itself.
My '70 Mustang had an adjustment screw to tighten the manual box. Helped some for a while.

No... The butt-head vans with the motor between the seats was the "A" series. Pickups of that era were "D" from the 1960 to 1980's years. Then the "B" series Dodge vans came out around 1970 or so. Motor box became a doghouse forward and had a hood. The Pickups around 64 were "D"

you do DO realize
the D100 is 1/2 ton pickup
any good automotive shop can get parts and work on it
although suspesion parts might a little harder to find
could always check with NAPA or Whitney in Chicago

A '64 will probably be overdue for a suspension overhaul. A truck/trailer shop may be willing to tackle it.

If you are near this guy he can fix anything. It will be expensive, but it will be done right and he backs his work 100%

Parts should be that hard to get.
