You say you have compression so valve timing should be good. You don't need a timing mark to time the distributor. Turn the crank so the valves on the opposing cylinder (#6) are rocking that puts #1 on TDC on the compression stroke. Now get a test light or continuity tester and do static timing on the distributor or line the notch on the distributor body with the roror. When you put in the distributor the rotor should be aimed almost toward #1 cylinder.
