1998 chevy P30 step van transmission issue

the transmission lever was moving up and down with no tension, and no noise on switching gears. Something new to me. Need Help . I somehow was able to get out of that parkinglot, mind you i couldn't reverse or nothing. it was stuck in D-rive. Got back, and was able to get the key out. The Transmission lever still goes up and down with no tension, and i don't know what the heck is wrong.
anyone

  • Be careful!

The disconnected shift lever can fool the neutral safety switch into thinking the transmission is in Park or Neutral when it is actually engaged in gear. I would not get under a vehicle with these symptoms unless the battery ground cable was safely removed, and doing that only when no one is near the driver's seat and ignition switch.
  • I would have someone crawl under by the transmission to see as you move the shift lever if it is also moving the arm on the transmission. You will need the parking brake on and wheels blocked as you do this. I think your linkage
may have come apart...if so, it will be a cheap fix.

Good luck & take care, Brian
