2 - 2000 watt vs 1 - 3000 watt noise level

So I'm looking at purchasing either 2 2000 watt Honda or Yamaha or 1 3000 watt Champion. I chose the 300 watt Champion for the good reviews AND the overall height. It is the only 3,000 I can find that will fit beneath my lockable aluminum tonneau cover on my F-250.

I will use it to recharge and also for the AC, hence the reason for the higher watts.

My question is, How does sound work in reference to having 2 2000 watts running versus the 1 3000? Will the 2 be considerably louder?

I don't think I've ever heard 2 - 2000's running together, however it would be great to only have to fire up one if I am only recharging. Thoughts?

  • I have (2) 2000W Hondas and love them. I like the fact that if I'm not running my AC I use less gas as well as I alternate them on and off every 10 - 12 hours to give the other one a break. I also like the fact that if for some reason one wont start or dies, I have a spare.

I normally dont run the AC with the Generators but they do handle it quite well.

If you get 2 of them build a aux fuel tank setup for them. I run mine off of an auxiliary boat tank so I dont have to worry about any of them running out.
  • I've heard both combinations at the race tracks. The 2 2000 Hondas are just a bit louder than the 3000, but only under load. Assuming you have 2 of them on purpose because you need the extra wattage, they will be under load though. They really spool up if you start an AC - I've seen them start a 13.5 AC but not a 15.5. However if not running towards full capacity they will be a lot quieter than the 3000 Champion and they also have variable throttle where I believe the Champion does not.

The quietest I've ever heard (and owned) is the Honda EU3000iS at 49db to 58db. That one might not fit under your bed cover though - mine was just a tad too large to fit under my BakFlip Fibermax cover on a 2012 F350. Mine would start either a 13.5 or 15.5 AC (not both at the same time though). It is relatively quiet even when running the AC.

Big price difference between the Honda and Champions though.

I applaud you on being sound-conscious with your generator. At the tracks we run into a lot of people who have what we call the "chainsaw" gennys that drive you nuts. :)
  • I've only heard my buddies 3k Honda for comparison to my twins. His 3k is quieter for sure.
  • 2-2ks together running my air are a 'moderate purr'. The 3ks I've heard, well, tried to hear, are the quietest thing going. Problem is, it may not start the air.

In reality, very few boondockers run air on a portable gen. I don't know why, maybe it's just too much hassle and gas.
  • You would only have to start one of 2000 watt units if you are only charging. I would guess that even the two together would be quieter then the larger champion. Now if you were comparing the two smaller Hondas with a 3000 watt Honda I would say the larger Honda would be quieter then two smaller units running together.
  • I have two 2000 yammy's and they're pretty loud, especially running the air conditioner. when I have the room, they sit at the end of 75ft of 10 gauge extension cords.

I've never heard a 3000 watt run, but I would wager it makes less noise than two 2000's, it's less electrical power and less horsepower.

Twin yammys are 3200 watts continuous output, 4000 watts peak, the champy is 2800 watts continuous and 3100 peak?
