I use a three light household tester to check 20A and 30A (with a 30/20 adapter) plugs. It's a good test for correct wiring. At the same time a voltmeter should be used to check voltage.
I also use an additional 50/30 adapter to check a 50A plug. This is a quick and easy basic test of 3 of the 4 wires. The second hot would not be tested.
With the addition of my PI HW50C power protector it does most of the checking these days including checking a 50A plug.
