3.6k or 4K generator

I have a choice between 2 similar RV's one main difference is the newer one 06 has an onan 3.6K on a diesel rig and the year older gas rig has an onan 4K generator. Both these RV's are 27 Ft with all the same accessories essentially. My question is should I be concerned? Is that a very big difference?

Thoughts?

  • Thanks everyone, I figured it out as all you know the 3.6 is LP and the 4K is gas.

Good to be able to ask questions though.

    Thanks
  • Yep, almost for sure that the 3.6 is an LP Onan... same generator as the 4.0, just derated for the lower-energy fuel. Run time may be an issue, depending on how you use the RV. If you're planning a lot or travel in warm weather with passengers in the back, the LP 3.6 may have 'short-legs' between fuelings. Every time I've bought LP, it's a hassle to some degree; the recent price spike makes me glad I don't use it for the generator. But if you seldom put long runs on the generator, it's not a big deal.

  • assuming the diesel RV has the LP 3.6 generator
and the Gasoline RV has the 4k gas generator
they are the same genset, the LP one is de-rated because of being LP

how much are you going to use it, occasional weekends, the GAS rv might be more convenient and less expensive to operate, gasoline from the main tank is more convenient fuel for generator boon dock use than LP
  • 3600 watts will provide 30 amps of service. If the coach is a 30 amp unit the extra 400 watts services no purpose.
  • Both generators will be fine with running a air conditioner and also run the microwave. Neither is able to run two A/C's at the same time, and you would need to shut off the A/C if you where running the microwave and toaster or other large load such as a 1,100 watt coffee maker or such loads.

The bigger question is how many miles a year you plan on putting on the RV and if the more expensive diesel engine is worth it or not. It has more expensive fuel filters that need to be changed more frequently, and typically has a $150 oil change, not the $35 oil change that a van or pickup with the familiar V10 would have.

  • Depends on whether one model is more reliable than the other, but I wouldn't buy either over the other based just on the 400 watt difference.

Neither is the difference of a single year in their age.

A much bigger issue is gas vs. diesel.
