j-d you really worry too much. There is NOTHING inherently wrong with an ATS switch. They rarely just "fail". People that have problems, CAUSE the failures. They switch under loads, and since nothing happens each time they do it, they continue until the relay's are pitted and fail. YES, a power surge can burn out the control board to the ATS, but that usually means you will have other appliances also take the hit. Treat your ATS correctly and it will last a very long time. It would be easier and cheaper to just buy an extra ATS and then replace it IF it fails. Trying to add gang switches and breaker type switches and NOT knowing what and how to do it can be dangerous.
