There are basically two different types of Auto Transfer systems..
One has NOTHING connected when you have no power. Start the generator and the generator contators (relays) pull in.. Shut it off and plug in and the shore contactors pull in.. Or the inverter ones if it has that options. (Some do)
Mine has SPDT relays.. There is simply no way they can connect to both SHORE and Generator at the same time. The moving arm has two contacts, if it's closed to Generator it can not reach SHORE and the other way around.
What can happen though is one (or the other) set of contacts can become welded to one side or the other, In that case it very simply will not transfer.
If you want a "Fail Safe" for that (Should it happen) I can easily design one for you, Reaquires basically two major parts and some mounting hardware. And it has a 2ndary use that is kind of nice too.
