Obviously, automatic transfer switches can and do fail, but I think you'll find it's not common event. In 2008 I sold a 1986 Dolphin Class C with an OEM ATS that is still going strong, and the OEM ATS in my current '95 Class A is still working as intended. My other Class A, a '93 DP, also has a working original ATS.
