There are a few things I will expand on because I can and have done this to several cables.
1 - Feel the cable - when you do determine what direction the internal conductors are wound.
2,3,4 Leave it out in the sun, roll it so as to wrap the conductors tighter, glue it back together.
* I had the best luck with Gorilla Glue. I hate the stuff, but it works. put just a little moisture on the cable and then the glue and wind it back together and have an beer with the money you saved.
My fixes are still there and the newest is three seasons old - I don't even remember the oldest.
