  • Hi,

If you feel you must have one, do not buy a bottom of the line. Do buy the progressive industries one.

My first choice would be an autoformer, particularly for a 30 amp rv.
  • I've used the Surge Guardfor six years now, and it seems to have served me well. It has tripped on several occaisions and alerted me to voltage situtions and power spikes. I keep it plugged in at home as well. Our power blinks pretty often and since it automatically resets, I don't know how many times it detects spikes and lows, but while camping, it's pretty apparent. It does it's job as advertized.
  • I have a Progressive Industries hardwired unit and I highly recommend that company. All their products have very good specifications. The cost of their products is a little more, but worth the difference.

The SSP-30 is the basic portable surge protector. But if you want better protection, go with the EMS-PT30C - that adds power protection (high or low voltage cut-off to protect equipment). There are many versions - hardwired, remote displays, etc. Poke around the Progressive Industries site for a good explanation of each model.

By the way I must tell you, I had TERRIBLE customer service from Surge Guard after the failure of a new unit.
  • Portable or hard wired is the only question.
Otherwise get the Progressive Industries EMS power protection.
  • Progressive Industries
    30A Hard wired power protection..surge protection plus.......LINK
They also have same in a portable unit.

    I have a 50A one.

WHY.because it tests power source before allowing power to rig.
It trips/resets on HI/LO Voltage conditions
    It monitors AC frequency

AND it has a LIFETIME Warranty.

    Other brands....1 yr. limited warranty

    Simple choice!
  • I bit the bullet and bought the progressive industries power protection system for our 5th wheel. I used the unit to replace the old 4x4 inch power box where the 30 service entered the trailer. This unit will protect from power surge, over and under voltage and many other conditions. Check it out at BestConverters.com . It does more than just a surge protector.
