35000 BTU A/C freezing up

Our 2002 Keystone Sprinter 28'fifth wheel with a single AC has been freezing up. It has happened before when we were in high humidity areas but we are in UT where the humidity rarely gets to 20%. Even before it freezes up, it doesn't seem to cool like it used to. It has been getting to the low 90's here but the AC will only cool to about 83-85. It seems to put out cool enough air in the first few hours and then the fan output lowers as well as the coolness; I suppose as it starts frosting up.

Does this mean it's low on coolant? If so, can I test this with the coolant refill gauge/attachment I use on our vehicles? Can coolant be recharged in these units?

Any other suggestions will be appreciated. We are in UT for another 2 months of hot weather:)

Thanks, 2oldmen. I thought I'd use this helpful RV forum instead of googling.
    Go right ahead.
  • Freeze up would be my guess also. You might want to check that it isn't leaking air form the output side directly back to the input, I've had that problem twice.

These forums can, and should be more helpful than Google. But folks with nothing to say should say exactly that. JMOO

2oldman, great response. For a senior member seems a little unkind.
Unkind? Telling him how to find the most reliable trustworthy information in the shortest amount of time? Shame on me.
  • Why is it an unkind response? And why not google it before asking?
  • There's a couple guys on here who are knowledgeable regarding specific AC units.

It would be best if you post make and model of tthe AC unit. Also whether it is ducted system or not.

In general what you want to do is get airflow up. Make sure filters are clean and there is no obstruction to airflow. Use highest fan speed. Insure there is no cold air recirculating directly into the inlet. There may be sensors misplaced or not functioning. But this is an area for one of the experts.

The one thing I don't think is likely is loss of refrigerant.

  • 35,000! Wow, that's a big one.
