All it takes is for one cell in one of the batteries to be shorted. When hooked up to a charger the charger then sees a low voltage and just keeps trying harder and harder to bring the entire group up to full charge. This continues until you either unplug them or one of the batteries explodes opening the circuit. Looks like you will be purchasing 4 new batteries.
