For this situation, I also think number 2 is correct. It would not hurt to consult with an electrician to be positive. You may not need to have the safety ground wire as heavy as the other wires, particularly if they are sized based on voltage drop rather than ampacity.
If you were wiring an outbuilding at the other side of the property with its own (sub-) panel, #1 would be correct, if I remember (and understand) things correctly.
