50 AMP Portable Surge Protector on 30 AMP Circuit

Hi All,

Getting ready to purchase a portable surge protector. Leaning toward the Progressive Industries EMS-PT50C.

Most of the time we hook up to 30 amp service. Usually (unless we know it is going to be real hot and need both A/Cs), I only bring the 30 amp power cable. It is much lighter and smaller than the 50 Amp one.

Any worries using a 50 Amp Surge Protector with a 30 Amp adapter on each side?

Thanks
Dan

The unit has many functions.... ONE of them is spike supression.. And a 50 amp unit is like 5 times better at that than a 30 amp unit

The only concern.. If you use the unit's built in ammeter to monitor (Personally) how much power you draw.. On 30 amp you need to add L-1 and L-2, on 50 maps you consider them separately.

What makes it "5 times better"? The price???

And I'm confused about your second comment. Isn't the 30 amp just running on one leg of the power? 30 amp has three wires, a 110v hot, a common and a ground. 50 amp has four wires, two 110v hots, a common and a ground, right?
  • Thanks all....as usual lots of great info share....I appreciate you all's time.

The only "Thihg" with using a 50 amp Energy Monitor (Surge Protector) on a 30 amp circuit is this.

The unit has many functions.... ONE of them is spike supression.. And a 50 amp unit is like 5 times better at that than a 30 amp unit

So not only will it work, just fine, It will work BETTER.. Just be sure to feed it with a good dogbone.

The only concern.. If you use the unit's built in ammeter to monitor (Personally) how much power you draw.. On 30 amp you need to add L-1 and L-2, on 50 maps you consider them separately.

Example on 30 ampl. readings of say 10 and 15 mean you are drawing 25 amps total (you only have one A/C on )

On 50 readings of 10 and 25 mean "Imbalance exists" (Of course if you turn on the other A/C you may see closer to 23/25 which is "Close enough to call it balanced"
  • I maybe wrong, but to me the surges coming down the line are the same reguardless of which amp connection you use.
  • We use our 50A progressive surge on 30A service when we have to use 30A works just fine. :)
  • Unless a CG charges more for 50A we always use the 50A. No limitations on what we can run.

And Yes we use our 50A progressive surge on 30A service when we have to use 30A
  • My 50A protector works just fine on 30A power. Never had a problem with it. Mine is mounted rather than portable but there shouldn't be any difference.

  • I don't see any problems with it except for the addition of the extra connectors.
