Adding electrical grease will help the connection and removal. It will protect the contact area. Should be no reason to clean it off. Suggest using an old sock to cover cord body while removed so grease doesn't get everywhere. - Dutch_12078Explorer III

Another option is to cut off the junky plug that has no handle and replace it with a nice one from Camco with a big molded grip
