50A Surge Protectors

Hello,
I am looking for a new 50A Surge Protector and was looking for a little guidance on the best way to go.
I have a Tiffan Class A with a 3000W Xantrex Inverter, Auto Gen Start, TVs, Microwave, etc that I don't want to see get messed up by a poorly wired power grid or power pole.
I was looking at the TRC units and the Progressive SSP50A, which is basic but much less expensive.
Any guidance is much appreciated.

Everybody calls them surge protectors but what you need is an EMS. The Progressive 50 amp unit is the best protection for your coach. Surges are not as common as over/under voltage and open or floating neutral or ground and in a 50 amp coach those conditions can be devastating.
  • If the 3kw inverter is wired up whole house (between incoming shore and the panel) it should have plenty of protection for you already. That said, on a 50a coach that may apply to one leg only.

My Prosine 2.0 does. Check your setup and your owner's manual.
  • If you are going to install one, you might as well do it right and put in a PE EMS LC HW 50. This has all the features that you want if you are worried.

It is also available in a portable version.

None will totally protect you, but this comes about as close as it's possible.
  • Not sure what the site includes as provided by the previous poster as the site will not open. Have included a site for a comparison of the Surge Gard and the Progressive Industries devices including both 30 and 50 AMP and hard wired and portable devices.

Note: as stated, EMS is much more than "surge" protection. The term "serge protector" is a dramatic understatement of the capability of these devices.

  • Thanks very much for all the good information. I went ahead and purchased the Progressive Industries EMS PT50C. It has all the features I wanted with a lifetime warranty and its made in America. I purchased from Tweety's and feel I got a good price- $326.00. Seems like a good spend when compared to thousands of $ of electronics at risk.

  • I installed a Progressive Industries Model EMS-HW50C, Progressive Industries 50 Amp Hard Wired EMS with Remote Display.

Protected the RV from low voltage - less than 104 volts many times at a campground that we stayed at over the 4th of July.

Went on a 3 week trip out west and it was nice to be able to monitor RV park voltages and current draw of appliances. Once place I was limited to 30 amps so I could monitor the loading closely.

I mounted mine in the storage compartment behind the breaker panel so wiring it up wasn't too hard. Working with 6 gauge stranded wire is a pain though.
