I disconnected the positive cable at the generator and when I touch try to connect the cable to the battery it starts to smoke again. I wonder if the wire is not connected to the emergency start relay ? but I have no idea how to find it or how to test it.

Set your meter to ohms.
Touch one probe to the red fired wire and the other probe to ground (frame), see if there is continuity. Then touch one probe to the positive cable of the generator and the other probe to ground (frame), see if there is continuity.
If you see continuity both times that should indicate a dead short on that cable between the battery and the generator.
