Well, here's my shot at a verbal equation: With three 6V batteries to get a 12 volt battery I guess you put two in parallel to make a huge 6V battery that has two times the amp hours of either 6V battery by itself. Then you put these two paralleled 6V batteries in series with the third 6V battery to make a 12V battery in which 1/2 of it is the single 6V battery ... which just happens to have only one half of the amp hour capacity of the two other paralleled 6V batteries.
The amp hour capacity of the new "12V battery" made up of three 6V batteries now becomes? I'm guessing ... but probably the same amp hour capacity as putting only two of the three in series with each other. One could then sell the third 6V battery because I can't figure out what to productively do with it.
(I could be all wrong on the above because I've not had much coffee today!)
